At first, each argument might sound convincing. But sounding convincing and being logically strong are not the same thing.

The premise is that many people are waiting to enter. The conclusion is that the restaurant must be excellent.
Once you seperate those parts, you can start asking better questions. Does a long line necessarily indicate excellent food? Could the restaurant be popular because it is cheap, fashionable, conveniently located, or featured on social media?

But what about durability, maintenance costs, software compatibility, performance, energy use, or employee productivity?
Once those factors appear, the cheapest laptop may no longer be the least expensive option over several years.

Hidden assumptions are not always wrong. The important point is that they should be examined instead of quietly accepted.
Learn to Recognize Common Logical Fallacies
A logical fallacy is a mistake or weakness in reasoning that can make an argument less reliable.
Some fallacies are easy to recognize once you know their patterns.
An ad hominem argument attacks the person instead of addressing the person’s reasoning. A hasty generalization draws a broad conclusion from too little evidence. A false dilemma presents only two choices when additional options exist.
Another familiar example is the slippery slope: claiming that one action will automatically trigger an extreme chain of events without enough evidence connecting each step.
Fallacies matter because weak reasoning can still sound highly persuasive.

Strong emotion can make an argument memorable without making it logically reliable.
Imagine an advertisement showing a worried parent and claiming:
“Good parents choose this security system.”

But the emotional appeal does not tell you whether the security system actually performs better than competing products.

You do not need to formally map every conversation into premises and conclusions.
The point is to develop habits that gradually become automatic.
When someone makes an important claim, identify what they want you to believe. Then ask what reasons support it, whether those reasons are reliable, and whether another explanation is possible.
When the topic matters, also look for information that challenges your current position.
Critical evaluation involves considering different sides, weighing supporting evidence, identifying bias, and remaining willing to revise conclusions when better information becomes available.
That last part is especially important.
Logical thinking is not about proving that you were right from the beginning. Sometimes the most rational outcome is realizing that another person’s argument is stronger than your own.
Changing your mind when the evidence changes is not failure. It is one of the clearest signs that reasoning is actually working.
Logical thinking gives you a practical framework for deciding whether an argument deserves to be believed.
By identifying premises and conclusions, checking evidence, examining assumptions, recognizing fallacies, and comparing alternative explanations, you can look beyond persuasive language and focus on the quality of the reasoning itself.
You do not have to become an expert in formal logic to benefit from these skills. Start with one habit: whenever you encounter an important claim, ask, “What reasons actually support this conclusion?”
Then examine those reasons carefully.
Practice this regularly when reading news, discussing ideas, making purchases, studying, or solving workplace problems. Over time, evaluating arguments becomes faster, clearer, and far more natural.
